Let’s talk about those rare creatures (Really and Truly!- “in my Jamaican voice’). The rare creatures who actually love their jobs. You know them. They wake up excited (or at least not miserable), they talk about work like it’s a passion project, and they don’t fantasize about faking a Wi-Fi outage to avoid another pointless Zoom/Teams meeting.
I’ve eyed them for YEARS and I know you have too. How? Why? (Merciful Mighty! - sorry i can’t help my Jamaican ways) but what secret hack did they unlock in life? Meanwhile, many are stuck dodging toxic bosses, dragging through meetings that could have been emailed, or daydreaming about quitting and becoming a full-time beach bum feeling “Irie man”.
But here’s the real kicker: Loving your work isn’t some fairytale reserved for a lucky few. It’s possible. And no, it doesn’t require selling your soul, quitting your job on impulse, or forcing yourself to be grateful for a job that bores you to death. Buju Banton told us - It’s not an easy road.
What If You’re Not There Yet?
Friend, let's be real—most people don’t love their work. At best, they tolerate it. At worst, they’re questioning all their life choices before their morning coffee/RUM. It’s just work and you have to “adult” every day. Lawd!
Guess What: You spend more time working than doing almost anything else—more time than with your family, friends, or binge-watching Netflix. So shouldn’t it at least be bearable—or dare I say, enjoyable?
How to Find That Work-Love Connection
The people who love their work didn’t all land dream jobs on the first try, heck the second or third try. They built their way into them. And you can too. I know you’ve heard it before boo, but trust me:
🔥 Figure Out What Actually Drives You – Not in the fluffy “follow your passion” way. What kind of problems do you like solving? What type of work makes you lose track of time? That’s your clue.
🔥 Make Your Job Work for You – You don’t have to burn it all down. Sometimes, small shifts—advocating for new projects, networking, or taking on leadership opportunities—can make a dull job exciting again.
🔥 Know When to Walk Away – If you’re stuck in a job that’s sucking the soul out of you, don’t gaslight yourself into thinking it’s normal. Sometimes, loving your work means having the guts to move on.
You Deserve to Love What You Do
You weren’t put on this Earth just to endure the workweek. Life nuh suppose to be one big countdown till retirement.
People who love their work aren’t unicorns. They’re people who figured out how to make their careers work for them. And if you’re not there yet? It’s time to start making moves.
So tell me—do you love what you do? Or are you just surviving till Friday? If not… wah really a stop yuh?
By the way - Happy Valentine's Day!
Wonderful!
This was very insightful, especially since I've been in both spaces recently.
This article definitely expressed a lot of what we go through. I especially liked the getting to that Work-Love Connection.
Now we just have to apply our passion to being our own business. That the next step eh!
Yes, I do deserve to love what I do. Working on it!
